Agribusiness and Inclusive Value Chain Development

Agriculture remains the economic backbone of most African countries — in terms of gross domestic product, employment and rural livelihoods. 63 percent of all Africans live in rural areas. It is the smallholder farmers who are feeding not only their own families but entire rural and urban populations. Smallholders provide precious raw materials and products for national, regional and international trade.

However, many of these very farmers are among these countries’ and the world’s poorest people. Therefore, improving their agricultural productivity and business capacity has become a major priority to achieve sustained growth and food security across the continent. Promoting rural agri-based micro and small-scale enterprises’ (MSMEs) capabilities to access and compete successfully in different markets is part of the endeavours. Today it is the focus of numerous GIZ projects.

The working group Agribusiness and Inclusive Value Chain Development addresses the objective of promoting market-oriented agricultural development through the creation of viable agribusiness ventures that are embedded into inclusive and sustainable value chains. The working group has been re-formed emerging from the former working group Agribusiness and Food Security, which has been split into this working group and a working group on Food & Nutrition Security and Resilience.

The working group comprises 40-50 development practitioners from various GIZ member projects, mainly located in sub-Saharan Africa.

  2. Access to Finance and Food Processing
  3. Formal and Non-Formal Education and Farmer Based Organizations


  • Inclusive contract farming
  • Farm economics & agricultural mechanisation
  • Supporting agricultural investments by improving access to finance and financial services
  • Strengthening farmer based organisations
  • Role of “incubation centers” in supporting young African agricultural entrepreneurs
  • Improving African agro- and food processing to increase local value addition and to generate employment
  • Introducing and improving quality and sustainability standards in agricultural production
  • Multi-sectoral coordination to improve agricultural productivity and rural economic growth (agriculture, sustainable economic development, financial system development etc.)

As cross-cutting topics in our work streams, we tackle the aspect of gender and ICT.
