SUMMARY:Human Rights and Equity in Biodiversity Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Seminar on Nature Conservation in German Development Cooperation on the Isle of Vilm\nThe recognition of rights and diverse value and knowledge systems\, inclusive decisionmaking and fair sharing of costs and benefits are all aspects of equity that are instrumental to achieving conservation goals. These issues have become an important concern in international biodiversity conservation policy and are high on the agenda of key conservation actors. Advancing human rights-based approaches remains a challenge in contexts of ill-aligned legal frameworks and conflicting interests around the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. \nBased on real-life examples the seminar will explore instruments and options for how the challenges can be addressed in practice and develop guidance for development cooperation. \nObjectives\n\nRaise awareness and provide “user-friendly” orientation about the international normative framework including concepts\, legal instruments\, actors and their rights and responsibilities\, as well as current trends and initiatives\nAnalyse and reflect on implications\, challenges and solutions for typical settings of development cooperation projects in the field of biodiversity conservation\nProvide information about instruments for implementation\, and identify options for action using „real life“ examples;\nDevelop recommendations on how to enhance human rights and equity in the area of biodiversity conservation at different levels of intervention in German development cooperation.\n\nA field trip will take place in the middle of the seminar. \nFor whom is the seminar?\nThe seminar is aimed at practitioners at the interface of development cooperation and biodiversity conservation (GIZ\, KfW\, BMZ\, BMUB\, consulting companies\, foundations\, NGOs\, universities\, partner organizations). \nThe number of participants for the 1st seminar is limited to 20\, for the 2nd seminar to 25. \nRegistration\nPlease register online. \nYou’ll also have to send a completed form to martina.finger@bfn.de. Otherwise\, your registration cannot be considered. \nParticipants will be chosen based on a number of criteria\, such as: \nRegional and institutional balance \n\nParticipation in previous seminars\nMotivation and relevance to work context\nAbility to contribute actively\n\nDeadline for online registration and submitting of application form: 31 March 2018\nFor questions\, please\, contact Martina Finger (martina.finger@bfn.de)\nConfirmations will be sent out by 30 April 2018 \nAbout the series of seminars on nature conservation in development cooperation\nThe series has been held at the International Academy for Nature Conservation Isle of Vilm since 1999. It is jointly organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)\, KfW Development Bank and the International Academy for Nature Conservation\, Isle of Vilm\, of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). \nThe first seminar “Biodiversity conservation for human well-being” presents an overview and update of the most relevant concepts. Based on a combination of practical examples\, tools and trends in biodiversity conservation for human well-being and development\, it provides a good platform for exchanging experiences. The second seminar is devoted to the in-depth consideration of a specific topic identified as of particular interest. Based on feedback from last year’s participants and on-going discussions in international biodiversity policy fora\, the topic “Human rights and equity in biodiversity conservation” was chosen for 2018. \nThe language of both seminars will be English. \nDownload flyer

SUMMARY:Comparing the Different Use of ICT4Ag to Inform Farmers in Africa and Asia -- Upcoming Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Members of the two SNRDs will share their experiences with ICT4Ag — from Africa to Asia and vice versa! \nSNRD Africa’s ICT4Ag Community of Practice joins up with SNRD Asia to exchange on how African and Asian farmers can easily access information using latest information and communication technology for agriculture. \n\nToday’s fast-evolving ICT represents a tremendous opportunity for rural populations to improve productivity\, to enhance food and nutrition security\, to access markets\, and to find employment in a revitalized sector  (World Bank 2017\, ICT in Agriculture\, Handbook). \nYour Content Goes Here\, Your Content Goes HereSNRD Africa recently released a new study on the use of ICT in agriculture. It covers 52 ICT4Ag solutions which have been developed for 29 GIZ projects\, operating in 34 countries on both continents. \nIn order to contribute to cross-boundary exchange between the two networks\, the upcoming webinar will have a closer look at a particular ICT4Ag solution that has been applied in India — comparing it to similar implementation in Africa. Lessons-learnt will also draw from specific failures on both continents! \nIs this relevant to you? \nThe webinar is designed for project staff of agricultural and rural development projects from both SNRDs who are interested in sharing their ICT4Ag-related experiences with colleagues in other parts of the world. \nWhat will be your takeaway? \nYou will learn how to use ICT4Ag to improve farmers’ climate resilience\, provide them with access to information\, extension services and finance in two very different contexts. \nPhoto by Klaus Wohlmann\nPhoto at the top by GIZ/Angelika Jakob \nWhat will be your takeaway? \nYou will learn how to use ICT4Ag to improve farmers’ climate resilience\, provide them with access to information\, extension services and finance in two very different contexts. \nThe presenters \nThe discussion will be led by Florian Moder\, who has gained considerable insights during the setup of the Network for Information on Climate (Ex) Change (NICE+) in India. Colleagues from SNRD Africa with know-how in providing farmers with extension services and finance will provide much more than a sounding board. \nWhere \nOnline via Skype4Buisness. Especially in terms of gender\, there’s clearly a huge gap when it comes to access to ICTs and using them in rural areas. \nThis is agonizing. Digitally illiterate female farmers could certainly benefit greatly from agricultural projects providing them with interfaces that are adapted so that they can use them – as long as it’s culturally appropriate. \n\nGlobally\, women use the internet 12% less than men. In Africa\, it’s 25%. While the gender gap has narrowed in most regions since 2013\, it has widened in Africa!\n(International Telecommunication Union) \n\nWhat will be your takeaway?\nFranziska Kreische of the research institute betterplace lab has gained substantial experience while working with development projects in Uganda. In the webinar\, she’ll speak about how rural women can be enabled and encouraged to use ICT components. \nThere’re many lessons to be learned\, applicable to other projects. In particular\, Franziska will present Briding the Digital Gender Gap\, a new survey of betterplace\, and we will also hear about Women Plant Doctors 2.0 – a GIZ project in Tunisia with a tight focus on empowering women. \nIs this relevant to you?\nThis webinar is designed for project staff and decision makers in agricultural projects who want to crank up women’s involvement – who are considering to develop new ICT components or wish to prop up already existing ones. \nYou already have tons of questions that you would like to ask Franziska Kreische?\nKindly send your questions to julia.bayer@giz.de prior to the webinar. We’ll make sure that Franziska covers your points in her presentation\, or we’ll get to them during the Q&A part of the session! \nHow to join\nThe webinar is conducted online via Skype4Buisness. Contact the organisers to receive the logins. \nPlease feel free to forward the invite to others.

SUMMARY:Smart Investments\, Big Returns: How Understanding Financial Data Can Transform Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:Learning from country experiences collecting and using budget data to improve their nutrition programs\nCurrent estimates suggest that current funding is not sufficient to address malnutrition. Part of the difficulty in securing the funding needed to tackle malnutrition is a lack of how much funding has already been allocated to nutrition and how much and where the funding gaps are. \nA number of countries have embarked on nutrition budget analysis exercises\, designed to identify available funding\, highlight existing gaps in funding\, and advocate for smarter investments in nutrition. Nearly 20 countries have completed this work\, often through a framework provided by the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement. SPRING’s interviews with representatives from 11 of these countries illustrated the complexities inherent in sharing these findings and the potential benefits from collecting and sharing data on a topic that is known best for the lack of information available. \nJoin SPRING for a webinar to learn more about the ways in which countries have used findings from nutrition budget analysis activities to identify and coordinate nutrition across sectors\, advocate for increased funding for nutrition\, and manage the use of nutrition funds. In this webinar\, we will hear directly from country practitioners about their experiences\, including their activities\, tools\, briefs\, and graphs used. \nSpeakers\n\nGwyneth Cotes | SPRING\, Director of Global Initiatives\nJovita Sandaite | Action Against Hunger (ACF) of Sierra Leone\, Advocacy Expert\nHugh Bagnall-Oakeley | Save the Children\, Senior Hunger Policy Adviser\n\nMore information\n\nNutrition Budgeting and Financial Analysis — USAID site\nBUDGET ANALYSIS FOR NUTRITION:  A guidance note for countries — by the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement\nTracking nutrition investments\, How much do governments invest in nutrition? – SUN site\n\nRegistration\nRegister online here. \nThe notification was provided by the FSNR working group!

SUMMARY:Webinar on Agricultural Value Chains — What’s in It for You?
DESCRIPTION:Webinar on Agricultural Value Chains — What’s in It for You?\nThis kickoff session will focus on introducing the overall concept of the ValueLinks Manual 2.0. Participants are invited to discuss which specific topics should be covered in the upcoming series of webinars\nThe sector project Agricultural Trade and Value Chains\, the SNRD working group Agribusiness and Inclusive Value Chain Development\, and the FMB cordially invite to their first online seminar. \nIs this relevant to you?\nThe webinar series is specially designed for all colleagues – in particular those from the Sector and Global Programs Department (G500) and SNRD – who get in touch with agricultural value chains as part of their project implementation. \nAbout the entire webinar series\nThe overall concept of the series hinges on an inclusive and proactive topic selection by you. Being demand-oriented means more to us than just saying it. Please have a look at the ValueLinks2.0 Manual to get an overview of which types of subjects we could delve into. \nHere are some ideas: Subject-wise\, we can include the analysis of socioeconomic\, ecological\, and gender-related aspects within value chain development\, business models and nutrition questions. However and most importantly\, we will have a closer look at the application of different tools in project context\, practical experience\, as well as challenges arising and lessons learnt. So we want to get your guidance on topics as well as on what kind of tools you would be interested to hear more of in the coming months. \nHow does this initial seminar work?\nIn this first kick-off session\, we will focus on introducing the overall concept of the ValueLinks Manual 2.0\, as well as on the discussion on which specific topics we will focus during the upcoming webinars. Andreas Springer-Heinze\, Senior Planning Officer at GIZ Eschborn will guide you through the kick-off webinar\, together with Alfons Eiligmann\, and Karina Brenneis. \nWhat’s your takeaway?\nWe want to encourage you to join the kick-off session and actively state your particular interests in certain areas related to agricultural value chains\, to get them covered in more detail during the upcoming webinar series. \nAbout the promotion of agriculture value chains\nInternational and German development cooperation has encouraged the promotion of agricultural values since the beginning of the 2000s. It is viewed as an important strategy to transform agribusiness towards more economic\, ecological and social sustainability. \nThe advancement shall lead to improved competitiveness and income increases for smallholders and workers — in agriculture itself as well as in upstream and downstream sectors. \nSince the food price crisis in 2007/2008\, strategies to promote value chains are more and more applied to support development goals around food and nutrition security\, not only reduce poverty. \nAbout the speakers\nAndreas Springer-Heinze is an agricultural economist by training and a Senior Planning Officer at GIZ Head Office in Eschborn\, Germany. He has extensive experience in the field of sustainable development. \nHe is author of the ValueLinks methodology on value chain development. In the past 12 years\, he has conducted inter-national training seminars and studies on value chain promotion in agribusiness\, bio-trade\, handicrafts\, small-scale manufacturing and tourism. \nIn 2009\, he founded the International ValueLinks Association e.V.\, together with colleagues engaged in value chain work. \nAlfons Eiligmann is a board member of the International ValueLinks Association and a ValueLinks master trainer since 2007. He facilitated more than 70 ValueLinks training courses and works as a consultant with GIZ projects in Africa and Asia. \nWhen: 17 Nov 2017\, 14.00-15.00h (CET) \nWhere:  Online via Skype4Buisness. This is a webinar for SNRD/GIZ only. \nYou already have tons of questions that you would like to ask Andreas Springer-Heinze and Alfons Eiligmann? \nPlease send your questions to Eva Maria Greber prior to the webinar. We will make sure that we cover your points during the brief presentation or we will get to them during the Q&A part of the session. \nWe are looking forward to having great discussions with you! It’s an exciting subject!

SUMMARY:Leveraging ICT to Make Agribusiness Attractive for Unemployed Youths: Some Concrete Ideas for Your Project -- Upcoming Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Leveraging ICT to Make Agribusiness Attractive for Unemployed Youths\nSome Concrete Ideas for Your Project — Upcoming Webinar\nThe ICT4Ag Community of Practice of SNRD Africa cordially invites SNRD colleagues to their next online seminar. We will focus on how agriculture development projects can make proper use of ICTs to create thought-after employment along the agri-value chains in rural areas. \nThe presentation will focus on how you can advance agricultural entrepreneurship of young people\, triggering ICT innovations in order to boost climate-resilient food value chains. \n\n“ICTs can help connect urban consumers with smallholder producers\, including women and young farmers. This way agriculture could become an attractive sector for talented young people who can make an important contribution in transforming African agriculture into a profitable and sustainable business.”\nMichaela Hailu\, Director CTA \nYour Content Goes Here\, Your Content Goes HereICT has great potential to excite young farmers/agripreneurs and entice young innovators to engage in new agricultural enterprises. About 65% of the total population of Africa is below the age of 35 years; over 35% are between the age of 15 and 35 years – making Africa a continent full of youth. Each year\, 10 million young Africans join the labour market\, more than ever before.  These young people are crucial for replacing the older farming generation. They can also bring an important contribution to the agriculture sector\, through innovation and especially digital ICT solutions. \nImplementing digital solutions can do much to improve the image of agriculture contributing to a future-oriented\, sustainable development in rural areas; when broadened to include agribusiness\, marketing and services related to crop and livestock production. ICT offers dynamic career options for young people with agricultural and non-agricultural profiles that Ken will go into. He will base his contributions on various activities — targeting both young farmers and young ICT agripreneurs — that CTA and others have been implementing for several years and including some new plans. He will present and illustrate a model for engaging youth in agriculture using ICTs. He would like to learn from your experiences as well and collectively with you reflect on the way forward for this issue. \nIs this relevant to you?\nThis webinar is designed for project staff and decision-makers in agricultural and rural development projects interested in using ICT4Ag to improve rural youth employment. \nWhat will be your takeaway?\nYou will learn how you can use ICT to encourage young farmers in your project to engage in agricultural value chains. \nAbout the speaker\nFor the last 20 years\, Ken Lohento managed numerous initiatives related to ICT policy and its use for food security and socio-economic development.  He has joined CTA in 2009 as ICT for Agriculture Programme Coordinator\, focusing on ICT and youth in agriculture through various activities. These ICT and youth activities won the UN WSIS Forum Awards in 2015. He is also Focal Point for CTA’s youth activities. \nHow to join\nThe webinar is conducted via Skype4Buisness and is open to SNRD members and GIZ staff only. RSVP julia.bayer@giz.de \nYou already have tons of questions that you would like to ask Ken Lohento?\nPlease send your questions to julia.bayer@giz.de prior to the webinar. We will make sure that Ken covers your points in his presentation\, or we will get to them during the Q&A part of the session! \nWe are looking forward to having great discussions with you! SUMMARY:Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals -- CoP12
DESCRIPTION:Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals — CoP12\nTheir Future is Our Future – Sustainable Development for Wildlife & People\nThe CMS CoP will place particular emphasis on the fact that migratory animals provide vital services that satisfy people’s everyday needs – as a source of food and medicine\, as pollinators and seed dispersers\, and as a means of pest control. Migratory species can also fire our imagination with their majestic presence and beauty and inspire us with their intrepid journeys across deserts and oceans. COP12 presents an opportunity to place the cause of nature conservation centre stage in the wider debate about the future of the planet and the fate of its residents – human and animal. \nIt is the first time that a CMS CoP will be held in Asia. The actual CoP will be preceded by a high-level panel (22 October)\, which will be moderated by a leading international broadcast journalist and will involve dignitaries and celebrities including executives of international organizations and prominent goodwill ambassadors. \nOn the eve of CoP\, an award ceremony under the Migratory Species Champion Programme (Champion Night) will be held (22 October). Several governments\, organizations and companies will be recognized as Migratory Species Champions for their long-term support to initiatives that benefit migratory species. \nNote for SNRD Africa members\nThe sister network SNRD Asia reaches out to you to get an idea who will be coming or is interested in coming. If you are not going\, there is the possibility to showcase your project work with any PR materials in the GIZ booth at the event. You can contact Anusara with any questions — by 30 September.

Mobile technology quickly delivers to rural smallholder farmers and other clients such as MSMEs with information that is critical for investments\, production and marketing decisions. Governments\, NGOs and the private sector can collect important field-level information for their decision-making and planning. Smartphones and apps are often seen as the best way to reap these benefits\, and there are numerous examples of their successful use in rural development projects. \nHowever\, mobile solutions that make use of simple mobile phones are more sustainable given that smartphones and mobile data are still prohibitively expensive for most Africans. Through the use of apps\, IVR and SMS\, it is possible to engage beneficiaries that have any kind of phone\, and mobile rewards project staff and field managers with rich data and timely insights for their M&E. \nHow to join\nFor technical requirements and to obtain access links\, please contact Julia.Bayer@giz.de of the Sector Project Rural Development\, which facilitates the webinar.
