SUMMARY:M&E of Employment Effects in Rural Development Projects
DESCRIPTION:Training workshop in Abidjan\n\n\n\n\nWe introduce the RWI methodology to enable projects to link current intermediate outcomes to employment effects. In the workshop you’ll learn how to apply this new methodology in your projects\, specifically how to better measure and report your employment impact and effects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTarget group/ participants \nOpen to all GIZ staff\, specifically monitoring and evaluation experts \nLanguage \nThe workshop will be conducted in English \nBackground \nIn Africa alone\, 440 million young people will enter the labour market by 2030. Therefore\, the creation of employment opportunities is a major objective in development cooperation. In parallel\, it is becoming increasingly important to measure the impact and effects of our projects on employment. Together with the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research (RWI)\, we created a pragmatic methodology to link current (project) outcomes to employment effects. \nYou want to participate? \nRegistration is open until 20.08.2019\, kindly email to finja.hartwig@giz.de from the SV. \nPlease inform the SNRD conference organisation team (irenepridu@gmail.com) in case your arrival day changes because of your participation in the workshop. \nNB: Seats are limited.

SUMMARY:How to Convince Stakeholders to Invest in a Landscape — The Economics of Forest Landscape Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Webinar with case studies from Ethiopia and Madagascar\, conducted by the FLR group which forms part of the CCLNRM Working Group\nWhat are costs and benefits of the various FLR options in the landscape? How can one convince stakeholders of the positive return of their investment in FLR measures? How can you calculate the ROI for the different FLR interventions in a particular landscape and improve project implementation from an economic point of view? \nDid you ever ask yourself similar kinds of questions because you are interested in the economic aspects of FLR? — Then our next webinar is for you! You’re welcome to join us and learn about the possibilities and constraints of a new methodology developed for measuring the economics of FLR. With the watershed of Lake Chamo in Ethiopia and mangroves in the Boeny region in Madagascar\, the methodology has been tested in two very different ecosystems and regions\, revealing interesting insights about the economics of Forest Landscape Restoration. \nYour takeaways\n\nInformation on the methodology of FLR economics\nInsights in the opportunities and constraints that economic assessments offer to FLR\nOpportunity to discuss possible implications for other regions and FLR projects\n\nPresenters\n\nLincoln Davis\, Senior Economist at UNIQUE forestry and land use\nDuncan Gromko\, Senior Economist at UNIQUE forestry and land use\n\nThis session will be conducted via Skype for Business in English. We will do our best to accommodate French-speaking participants during the discussion. \nFor further information\, please contact Christian Burren (Christian.burren@giz.de) or Anna Rother (anna.rother@giz.de). \nEconomics glossary\n(Terms used in the presentation — Click to enlarge)

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Nutrition — How Can We Eat Below 2 Degrees?
DESCRIPTION:Webinar in the Nutrition Knowledge Snack Series \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe planetary health diet (EAT Lancet\, 2019)\, which consists mainly of fruits\, vegetables\, whole grains and plant-based sources of protein\, is healthy for people and the planet. How can we translate recommendations to transform the food system into project implementation? By presenting examples working on the nexus between climate and nutrition\, we want to explore the collaboration between the two sectors\, its potential and challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\nAnika Reinbott (SV APES)\nPauline Probst (SPA)\nKatalin Solymosi (Unique Forestry & Landuse)\n\nBackground\nLast year the ‘Food Security\, Nutrition and Resilience’ working group decided to facilitate exchange between group members in order to increase the level of learning from one another. The group identified topics of great interest to the community as well as specific learning events which are included in the work plan of the group. \nThe IDA community platforms have been set up and are already used actively. Hence\, ‘the floor is open’ for fruitful technical exchange. \nThe aims of the webinars in the Knowledge Snacks series which started in early 2019 are: \n\nTo support learning and knowledge exchange between projects on emerging relevant topics on FNSR in an informal manner\nTo facilitate virtual exchange of community members\n\nContact\n\n\n\nines.reinhard@giz.de and anika.reinbott@giz.de \n\n\n\nPhoto: © GIZ

SUMMARY:Inclusive Transformation of Rural Africa — Key Recommendations of the EU Task Force Rural Africa
DESCRIPTION:Expert talk\n\n\n\nTo strengthen the EU’s partnership with Africa\, President Jean-Claude Juncker announced in his 2018 State of the Union speech a new ‘Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs’. To operationalize the suggested actions of this alliance a group of African and European experts – the Task Force Rural Africa (TFRA) – was tasked to propose concrete solutions for a positive rural transformation and an inclusive and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sector. \nIn March 2019\, the Task Force published its landmark report\, an agri-food and rural agenda for the new ‘Africa-Europe Alliance’\, which proposes four strategic areas of action: job creation\, climate action\, sustainable transformation of African agriculture and development of the African food industry and markets. \nThis event will discuss the key recommendations of the report with the German TFRA members Prof. Christine Wieck and Albert Engel and reflect on the opportunities for German development cooperation in the implementation of the proposed actions. \nYou’ll learn about the key recommendations and proposed actions and have the opportunity to ask questions and receive first-hand answers from the authors of the report. \n\n\nWe encourage you to join our discussion in order to understand what this new Africa-Europe Agenda for Rural Transformation holds for the future and what it (could) mean for your daily work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \nModeration \n\nMarc Nolting\, Team Leader Fundamentals for a Rural Future and Nutrition\, G530\n\nWelcome & introductory remarks \n\nTobias Gerster\, Director Division Africa Supraregional and Horn of Africa\, GIZ\n\nTFRA expert presentations \n\nInsights on the proposed Africa-Europe Agenda for inclusive rural transformation Albert Engel\, member of the Task Force Rural Africa\, Director Corporate Unit Evaluation\nInsights on Agricultural Trade & Finance\nChristine Wieck\, member of the Task Force Rural Africa\, Head of Department Agricultural and Food Policy at the Hohenheim University\n\nFishbowl discussion: Relevance of the report – why it is important for our work? \n\nInge Baumgarten\, Director GIZ Liaison Office to the African Union\, OE 1700 (tbc)\nUli Sabel-Koschella\, Team Leader Value Chains Agriculture\, OE 1720\nChristel Weller-Molongua\, Director Division Rural Development\, Agriculture\, G500\n\nWrap-up and closing \n\nChristel Weller-Molongua\, Head of Division Rural Development and Agriculture\, G500\n\nLight lunch \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information \n“Global Partners on Equal Footing — Calling for an Africa-Europe agenda for rural transformation”\nFind video interviews (forthcoming)\, the Task Force Report\, Fact Sheet and more in this detailed article.

DESCRIPTION:Upcoming webinar with pre-recorded inputs for enhanced experience.  Watch the presentations in your own time beforehand without the usual technical hitches and later join the actual webinar for only the discussion! \nTypically a National Youth in Agribusiness Strategy will be faced with numerous challenges in a devolved governmental system. This webinar will have a look at how youth strategies can be planned sufficiently and carried out practically at regional level. \nWhat needs to be done to support rural youth in their role as change agents\, to organise themselves as democratically legitimized representatives and\, all in all\, to create a gateway for structured coordination and communication with different types of stakeholders? \nThe GIZ Agriculture Team in Kenya and two rural youth representatives share their experiences on participatory policy and project initiatives. \nNote on the pre-recorded inputs\nAll inputs are already available as video recordings at the page linked below. During the actual webinar\, there will only be kick-off summaries of the presentations. Participants are kindly requested to watch the video inputs prior to the event. \nIn case you foresee not having time to participate\, you can submit your questions to the moderator via email\, who will relay them to the presenters during the event.

SUMMARY:How to Promote Youth Agripreneurs in Rural Africa — Upcoming Webinar
DESCRIPTION:New online series on rural employment with a particular focus on youth\nAbout the series \nThe series is guided by the question of how projects can promote both employment opportunities as well a spirit of agripreneurship with young Africans in remote areas. Agripreneurs are young entrepreneurs who combine a specific agricultural know-how to launch their own business model along the agriculture and food value chain. \nThe first session focuses on promoting entrepreneurship\, start-ups and self-employment for rural youth! \nWho are the presenters?\nAfter a short introduction to the new webinar series by Frank Bertelmann\, Matthias Schnier and Ahmed Huzayyin will provide the key inputs and lead the discussion. \nMatthias works for GIZ’s Promotion of sustainable agriculture and rural development programme in Tunisia and Ahmed is with the engineering and management consultancy Chemonics Egypt. The firm has vast experience in promoting entrepreneurs thanks to their track record in consulting start-ups and applying MSMEs tools and approaches in sectors like waste management\, water systems\, sustainable energy and sustainable agriculture and food production. \nShifting perceptions: From unemployment youth to agripreneur\nThe World Bank estimates that until 2030 440 million young people will enter Africa’s rural labour market. Until then agriculture will remain to be the single most important source of income and employment for people in rural Africa. \nThe current situation with low income\, bad working conditions and lack of innovative technology in African agriculture contributes to a negative image of agriculture with young Africans. The promotion of agricultural entrepreneurship through start-up and MSME support\, especially with a focus on services and ICT-based opportunities\, helps to improve the attractiveness of the sector for young Africans along agricultural value chains. \nIs this relevant to you?\nThe webinar is designed for project staff\, decision makers and partner organisations. The two inputs will cover experiences in the MENA-region\, but the conclusions will be transferable to other regions. \nWhat will be your takeaway?\nBased on his extensive experience with tracking firms for more than five years of operations\, Ahmed will draw a detailed picture of how entrepreneurship can develop markets. The first practical implementation of these findings by GIZ Tunisia will stress the importance of the inspiration\, orientation and market testing of ideas with young agripreneurs\, way before starting to support the business-creation process.
