SUMMARY:The Effects of COVID-19 on international Trade: Aspects of Global Supply Chains\, Agricultural Trade and Fisheries
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming Webinar \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 poses unprecedented challenges to economies worldwide and our all well-being. \nMost of us stay at home now\, but how do essential goods and services still reach us and those who need them most? We are just beginning to understand what COVID-19 will mean for international trade in general and for developing countries’ trade prospects in particular. \nIn the coming months\, policymakers in the global south\, as well as north\, will need to set the direction not only for the future of our economies but also for the future of our societies. Better make the right decisions now than return to the drawing board later. At this point\, gathering and exchanging information is of crucial importance. \nWith the aim of bringing together GIZ technical expertise and experiences around the globe\, the sector projects “Agricultural Trade\, Agribusiness\, Agricultural Finance” (SP AAA) “Trade and Investment for Sustainable Development” (SP Trade and Investment)\, “Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture” (SP Fish) are inviting you to join a 1-hour webinar. \nWe would like to discuss with you the latest developments in trade\, agricultural trade and fisheries. Furthermore\, we are eager to hear from your experiences so please do not hesitate to use the chat during the webinar to let us know how COVID-19 has impacted trade in your country. \n\n\n\nAgenda: \n\n\n\n5 min\nWelcoming words and introduction\nHeike Hoeffler and Kristina Mensah (SP AAA)\n\n\n10 min\nImpact on global trade\nTobias Leeg\, Sascha Berndt (SP Trade and Investment)\n\n\n10 min\nPresentation of the current literature on the impacts of COVID-19 on agricultural trade\nAdriana Garcia Vargas (Consultant SP AAA)\n\n\n5min\nImpact on fisheries\nSophia Kochalski (SP Fish)\n\n\n25min\nDiscussion\n\n\n\n5 min\nWrap-up\nSara Mohns (SP Trade and Investment)\n\n\n15 min \nOptional extension of discussion for those interested

\nFor privacy reasons YouTube needs your permission to be loaded. For more details\, please see our Privacy.I AcceptContact\nPour plus d’information\, veuillez contacter Christian Burren (Christian.burren@giz.de) ou Anna Rother (anna.rother@giz.de). \nPhoto\nSite de production de plants à Mogazang\, © Josephine Makueti/GIZ

SUMMARY:How to Integrate Living Incomes in Agricultural Value Chain Promotion?
DESCRIPTION:Webinar #12 of the ValueLinks Plus series on agricultural value chain promotion\nWe will have a closer look at the essentials of the living income concept. How is it calculated and how are living income reference prices set up? Where are we at in terms of its application right now? How should it be applied in the context of the ValueLinks approach and what will be its likely relevance in future? \nGuests\n\nEberhard Krain\, GIZ Sectoral Department (Competence Centre 4D30)\nTim Loos\, GIZ Sector Programme Sustainability and Standards in Global Agriculture Value Chains\n\nModeration\nAlfons Eiligmann\, International ValueLinks Association \nHost\nCarolin Voigt\, GIZ Sector Project Agricultural Trade\, Agribusiness\, Agricultural Finance (SP AAA) \nIs this relevant to you?\nYou promote agricultural value chains development and want to learn more about the approach of living incomes?\nYou have no idea (yet) whether living incomes are a valuable aspirational goal to strive for\, or far from achievable\, or still not high enough to make a real change towards better living conditions???\nYou want to get an idea how the approach is used within project implementation for agribased value chain promotion\, e.g. in Ghana or Malawi? \nIf the answer to one of these questions is ‘yes’\, our webinar #12 will be worth your while! We will focus on the essentials of the concept\, explain how a living income is calculated\, how a reference price is determined and how it has already benefited countries to negotiate for higher commodity prices and encouraged our own governments to think of due diligence regulations. \nOur guest Eberhard Krain will explain the concept of living incomes\, the calculation of living incomes and reference prices and tell us about his country experiences from Malawi and Madagascar. \nThe second guest\, Till Loos\, provides insights to the cocoa value chain in Ghana and Ivory Coast. SUMMARY:Digital Applications in Small-Scale Irrigation
DESCRIPTION:Half-Day Workshop With Online Access\n\n\n\nDigital applications for improving efficiency and for monitoring agricultural water use play an increasing role in the debate on small-scale irrigation in international cooperation. On the one hand\, technical processes for minimizing irrigation water and reducing the use of fertilizers as well as for energy savings in irrigation technology can be supported. On the other hand\, apps can often facilitate management processes and the monitoring of irrigation and operating systems. However\, up to now\, digital applications that specifically target small-scale irrigation have only been used sporadically and pilot-like in GIZ projects. \nAs part of a market analysis — which is supported by the Competence Centers for Agriculture and for Water\, SV Sustainable Agriculture\, SV Sustainable Waterpolicy\, Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector and the Project Promotion of the productive agriculture\, Niger — the team investigating the potential of digital applications for small-scale irrigation. The aim is to identify and structure existing experiences and\, based on current developments and challenges\, to define further requirements for digital applications in this area. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor that reason Ralph Elsaesser was selected as a consultant to conduct a study. As a graduate engineer in electrical engineering and a graduate hydrogeologist he has been working for almost 25 years at the interface between water and IT\, for the past 10 years also in the synergy space of agriculture and computer science. \nThe study is to gather experiences from different directions. An exchange with as many discussion partners from different areas is therefore necessary. Experiences and requirements from development projects\, especially from Africa and Asia\, are interesting\, as well as knowledge from competence centers and universities or details about available technical products. The focus is on increasing efficiency of irrigation practices and sustainable use of the resource. \nRalph Elsaesser is searching more interview partners for short ~30 minute interviews via Skype or another channel. If you are available and if you have an interest in sharing your experiences please write to ralph.elsaesser@geo-solutions.de or Skype user name: relsaesser \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is this event for? \nMembers of the GIZ working group on water and agriculture\, experts from GIZ agriculture and water sector projects\, freelance consultants\, companies working at the interface water and agriculture\, experts from the GIZ sector networks Mediterranean Environmental Network\, Sector Network Rural Development and Services on Water and Sanitation. \nAgenda \nDownload pdf \nAdditional information \nIDA Community Water and Agriculture & Agriculture and Water explores interlinkages between those two important sectors. SUMMARY:What Works in Rural Youth Employment Promotion?
DESCRIPTION:Webinar focusing on good practices and lessons from GIZ programmes with regard to rural youth employment\nSince Africa’s (rural) youth is rapidly growing in numbers\, advising on job creation has become a major objective of development cooperation. \nFor German development employment cooperation the promotion in rural areas with a focus on youth is still a relatively new topic. While the issue is becoming more pressing\, very few projects explicitly and comprehensively address the issue. \nNevertheless\, many projects of both rural and economic development\, are addressing different aspects and a range of learning experiences is already available. The Sector Project commissioned a study to outline the different approaches to rural youth employment promotion (RYEP) within GIZ programmes and distill their main success factors and lessons learned. \nThe consultants Claudia Knobloch and Christian Pirzer of Endeva are going to present the main findings and highlight two of the 11 case studies in an interactive interview. There will be plenty of time to discuss with representatives of the featured case studies\, but also amongst each other about the results and their implications.

SUMMARY:Future Market Africa !
DESCRIPTION:Business Round Table at AGRITECHNICA \nMany African economies are investing heavily in their agri-food industries. We will present success stories of market development in sub-Saharan Africa from a German perspective\, successful business models of African entrepreneurs\, information on promotion and financing options as well as targeted matchmaking that are intended to highlight new business opportunities. \nThe mechanization of agriculture – that is using machinery for ploughing\, threshing\, harvesting and other related tasks – is increasingly important for Africa’s rural transformation. Rapid urbanization is pressurizing Africa’s agriculture systems to produce more with less labor\, as more and more people move to cities or engage in non-agricultural rural activities. In response\, farmers in many parts of the continent are showing increased demand for mechanization. There is increasing demand for suitable agricultural machinery for tillage\, sowing and harvesting as well as storage technology. Business models such as contractors\, rental services and contract farming systems are evolving. \nWho is the event for?\nThe Business Round Table is aimed at business delegations from various countries as well as German companies: \n\nManufacturers of agricultural equipment (AGRITECHNICA exhibitors)\nExporters of used machinery\nImporters and dealers from selected African countries\nEnd customers (agricultural enterprises and cooperatives etc.) from selected African countries\nPolicymakers\nFinancial service providers\n\nYour takeaway\nWe bring different types of actors together\, exchange best practices\, present new consulting tools as well as funding and financing opportunities for German and African companies. \nAgenda\n\nWelcome and introduction\nInput: Success story of a German technology manufacturer – market entry into sub-Saharan Africa\nInput: Successful business models of African companies\nModerated panel discussion with audience participation\nRefreshment and communication break (drinks/snacks)\nInput: How can mechanization be implemented sustainably and profitably in Africa? Presentation of a consulting tool\nFunding and financing options for manufacturers\, dealers and buyers\nModerated panel discussion with audience participation\nB2B at theme tables\nWrap-up and outlook for the next steps\n\nAbout AGRITECHNICA\nInternational fair for the agro-machinery industry and a forum for the future of plant production. The world’s leading companies in the sector will there to present their latest innovations.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Nutrition — How Can We Eat Below 2 Degrees?
DESCRIPTION:Webinar in the Nutrition Knowledge Snack Series \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe planetary health diet (EAT Lancet\, 2019)\, which consists mainly of fruits\, vegetables\, whole grains and plant-based sources of protein\, is healthy for people and the planet. How can we translate recommendations to transform the food system into project implementation? By presenting examples working on the nexus between climate and nutrition\, we want to explore the collaboration between the two sectors\, its potential and challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\nAnika Reinbott (SV APES)\nPauline Probst (SPA)\nKatalin Solymosi (Unique Forestry & Landuse)\n\nBackground\nLast year the ‘Food Security\, Nutrition and Resilience’ working group decided to facilitate exchange between group members in order to increase the level of learning from one another. The group identified topics of great interest to the community as well as specific learning events which are included in the work plan of the group. \nThe IDA community platforms have been set up and are already used actively. Hence\, ‘the floor is open’ for fruitful technical exchange. \nThe aims of the webinars in the Knowledge Snacks series which started in early 2019 are: \n\nTo support learning and knowledge exchange between projects on emerging relevant topics on FNSR in an informal manner\nTo facilitate virtual exchange of community members\n\nContact\n\n\n\nines.reinhard@giz.de and anika.reinbott@giz.de \n\n\n\nPhoto: © GIZ

To operationalize the suggested actions of this alliance a group of African and European experts – the Task Force Rural Africa (TFRA) – was tasked to propose concrete solutions for a positive rural transformation and an inclusive and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sector. \nIn March 2019\, the Task Force published its landmark report\, an agri-food and rural agenda for the new ‘Africa-Europe Alliance’\, which proposes four strategic areas of action: job creation\, climate action\, sustainable transformation of African agriculture and development of the African food industry and markets. \nThis event will discuss the key recommendations of the report with the German TFRA members Prof. Christine Wieck and Albert Engel and reflect on the opportunities for German development cooperation in the implementation of the proposed actions. \nYou’ll learn about the key recommendations and proposed actions and have the opportunity to ask questions and receive first-hand answers from the authors of the report. \n\n\nWe encourage you to join our discussion in order to understand what this new Africa-Europe Agenda for Rural Transformation holds for the future and what it (could) mean for your daily work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \nModeration \n\nMarc Nolting\, Team Leader Fundamentals for a Rural Future and Nutrition\, G530\n\nWelcome & introductory remarks \n\nTobias Gerster\, Director Division Africa Supraregional and Horn of Africa\, GIZ\n\nTFRA expert presentations \n\nInsights on the proposed Africa-Europe Agenda for inclusive rural transformation Albert Engel\, member of the Task Force Rural Africa\, Director Corporate Unit Evaluation\nInsights on Agricultural Trade & Finance\nChristine Wieck\, member of the Task Force Rural Africa\, Head of Department Agricultural and Food Policy at the Hohenheim University\n\nFishbowl discussion: Relevance of the report – why it is important for our work? \n\nInge Baumgarten\, Director GIZ Liaison Office to the African Union\, OE 1700 (tbc)\nUli Sabel-Koschella\, Team Leader Value Chains Agriculture\, OE 1720\nChristel Weller-Molongua\, Director Division Rural Development\, Agriculture\, G500\n\nWrap-up and closing \n\nChristel Weller-Molongua\, Head of Division Rural Development and Agriculture\, G500\n\nLight lunch \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information \n“Global Partners on Equal Footing — Calling for an Africa-Europe agenda for rural transformation”\nFind video interviews (forthcoming)\, the Task Force Report\, Fact Sheet and more in this detailed article.
