SUMMARY:From Mandate to Money: Scaling Agroecology Through Policy-Driven Investment
DESCRIPTION:Despite the challenging global context affecting food systems\, agroecology continues to advance as a pathway towards food system transformation. This is evidenced by the emergence of national and regional policies and strategies around the world. In 2025\, several countries introduced or strengthened their policy frameworks supporting agroecological transitions. \nThis webinar provides an overview of how countries are building a national framework for change and how such policy instruments can spur investments and support. We will present country briefs for the Agroecology Coalition government members as well as National Agroecology Strategies. \nWe will hear from country representatives\, funders\, and policy experts. Join the conversation! \nPartners: Biovision Foundation\, BMZ (Germany)\, and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation \nRegistration: Webinar Registration – Zoom \nInterested in exchanging on national agroecology strategies? Reach out to agroecology@giz.de.

SUMMARY:On the Benefit of Digital Advisory Services
DESCRIPTION:Global Sharing Webinar\nSince May 2022 the Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services\, GFRAS\, has been running a participatory research process on digital rural advisory services supported by GIZ’s Sector Project Agriculture. \nThe research aims to better understand how digital rural advisory services can support the promotion of good agricultural practices and improve farmers’ livelihoods. \nUnder the guidance of GFRAS Regional Networks four regions participate in the process: Anglophone Africa\, Francophone Africa\, Latin America\, and Southeast Asia. \nDuring the webinar the main findings from each region will be discussed\, viz: \n\nThe current potentials and challenges regarding economically digital rural advisory services and how digital tools are contributing to strengthening the agri-food system and enhance the livelihood of smallholder farmers\nThe operational and institutional implications of using such digital advisory services for so-called extension agents and their organizations\, for reach\, and quality of their services\n\nThe regions were tasked with identifying existing digital rural advisory services solutions servicing smallholder farmers and operating at scale (minimum of 20.000 users)\, meaning digital rural advisory services solutions that are already beyond the start-up phase. \nThis process further helped identify success and constraint factors in the respective regions; how problems\, for example in the development or implementation phases\, were or could be overcome and what the actual reality of using digital agriculture services in their regions looked like. \nMore information\nClick on image to access video\nMain findings\, methods used\, and details from each of the four regions are currently being revised in the form of regional reports. They will be available to the public in July 2023. \nTime of Webinar\n29 August 2023\, 13:00-15:00 CEST \nContact\nDiekjuergen@giz.de and Birthe.Lappe@giz.de. \nBoth are advisors in the Sector Project Agriculture and work on topics such as agricultural production and extension. Diana is also active in the working group on Digital Transformation. \nAbout GFRAS\nThe Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services is a Switzerland-registered association established in 2010. It comprises a system of platforms at national\, regional and global levels bringing together key actors involved in the delivery of rural advisory services to farming communities. \nGFRAS aims to enhance the performance of advisory and extension services providers in better-serving farming families and rural producers\, thus contributing to improved livelihoods in rural areas and the sustainable reduction of hunger and poverty. \nThe national platforms contribute to the development and implementation of strategies and programs tackling national-level issues in agricultural development and link these to policies and efforts at the regional and global levels through the GFRAS networks. \nPhoto credit\nExtension worker Ipuk Darmanto explains methods of controlling potato plant diseases by the use of MyAgri to Alo\, a farmer in Lembang sub-district of West Bandung District\, West Java Province during the RAS-SEA digital RAS Study supported by GFRAS and GIZ. ⎮ © GFRAS and RAS-SEA

SUMMARY:Agricultural Value Chain Finance
DESCRIPTION:Online Training\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Agricultural and Value Chain Finance\, including digitalization and technology in access to finance as well as climate-smart agricultural financing \n6–8 April 2022 from 9-13 CET each day (3 modules) \nIs it for you? \nThe training has been developed for national and international GIZ staff working with the agricultural or food-based sectors\, based in partner countries or at head office\, who want to explore how access to financial services can improve project beneficiaries’ lives. \nRequirements \nThis is introductory training\, and little or no financial systems development expertise is expected\, whereas a thorough understanding of agricultural value chains is required. \nThe course language is English\, therefore the ability to communicate fluently in English is required\, as well as the willingness to participate actively and share experience. \nParticipants should be prepared to invest up to 15 hours over three days (in one week) for the course and should have access to an office or other room where they can participate in online sessions without being disturbed. Basic IT literacy (including the use of MS Teams) and a stable internet connection allowing for voice and ideally video is required. \nContent details \n\nModule 1 will provide the basis for the following two days. We will discuss the reasons why financial services matter for agricultural stakeholders by looking at the financial lives of our target groups and their needs. It will cover the main concepts of financial inclusion and agricultural finance and give an overview of financial services and provider types. Finally\, we will put ourselves into the shoes of a financial institution and try to understand the obstacles to financing agriculture.\nModule 2 will cover digitalization and technology in financial inclusion and particularly agricultural lending\, as well as climate-smart agricultural financing. For both topics\, we will first look at the theoretical basics before we will be able to discuss their experiences with guest speakers from GIZ projects.\nModule 3 will look at how and where to start when planning to set up a financing component in your project. In addition\, we will look at typical set-ups and instruments GIZ offers to support these. We will also be able to talk to a guest speaker from a financial institution to hear about their initiatives as well as what they look for when collaborating with an institution such as GIZ.\n\nSpots are limited and will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nPlease make sure to secure your spot with jakob.fischbacher@giz.de before 18 February  \nIf you have further questions\, please send an e-mail to lara.chhatwal@giz.de or bastian.domke@giz.de.

SUMMARY:Save the Date for the Next SNRD Africa Conference
DESCRIPTION:SNRD Africa and Climate Change Adaptation\n(working title)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSNRD Africa is delighted to announce its next conference in November! \nThe conference\, including working group exchanges\, training and field trips\, will take place between November 19-November 26. So mark your calendars! \nAt the moment we are planning for a hybrid format — that is in an interactive online format combined with action at a venue in Accra/Ghana. \nAs for the date\, it was specifically picked to be right after the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference to have a strong impetus for discussion on how to sustainably transform rural development given the threat climate change imposes on partner countries and what SNRD Africa’s contribution can be to tackle the multitude of challenges! \nStay tuned and check this spot. More information to follow shortly. Kindly also note that the theme of the conference is still under review as well.

SUMMARY:Nature-based Solutions: The contribution of biodiversity to address societal challenges
DESCRIPTION:Online seminars on nature conservation in German development cooperation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe series of seminars on nature conservation in development cooperation has been held at the International Academy for Nature Conservation Isle of Vilm since 1999. It is jointly organised by GIZ and KfW on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the International Academy for Nature Conservation\, Isle of Vilm\, of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). \nThe first seminar “Biodiversity conservation for human wellbeing” presents an overview and update of the most relevant concepts. Based on a combination of practical examples\, tools and trends in biodiversity conservation for human wellbeing and development\, it provides a good platform for exchanging experiences and updating. The second seminar is devoted to the in-depth consideration of a specific topic identified as being of particular interest. Based on on-going discussions in inter-national biodiversity policy fora\, the topic “Nature-based solutions” was chosen for 2021. \nMore information \nFlyer

SUMMARY:Practical Tools to Make Gender Transformation Work
DESCRIPTION:What are gender-related constraints and how can projects address them?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese were the kind of questions that had triggered SNRD Africa and its sister network SNRD Asia Pacific to set up action plans in support of gender empowerment and\, more specifically\, qualified gender in value chains training. \nThe eight-week-long online training attracted 70 participants from 22 projects working in 18 countries across the Africa and Asia regions. All of them drew gender-sensitive value chain maps\, conducted interviews with partners — for as far as Covid regulations permitted — and with a comprehensive case study of the respective value chain in their project developed a monitoring plan to measure results towards gender equality and women’s economic empowerment. The training was SNRD’s first online training\, offered in French and English. \nThe examined value chains were as diverse as potatoes\, groundnut\, abaca\, rice\, roasted cashews\, cow milk\, cassava\, or even honey. After the training participants shared with each other strategies on how they wanted to integrate the new knowledge in their projects and how they thought to best use the practical tools to work more towards a gender-transformative world. \nWith this widely offered training\, the two sector networks wanted to place the cross-sectional issue of gender on a higher\, more strategic level and to continue to support the new working group on Gender-transformative Approaches in Rural Development. \nWant to learn more?\nJoin our concluding webinar “From gender analysis to gender transformation – Knowledge snacks from the gender training in agricultural value chains” on  Thursday\, 20 May\, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CEST. You’ll get a chance to dive deep into the gender-sensitive value chain map and the Reach-Benefit-Empower Framework. \nAdditional information and contact\nThe invitation to the webinar and complete access to training materials is available to SNRD members. SUMMARY:Learnings From Africa’s ATVET Journey and the Way Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming webinar\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking in agriculture and skills development?\nDon’t miss this online seminar on Africa’s agricultural TVET journey! Join us as we review highlights and lessons learnt from the continental implementation of Agricultural Technical Vocational Education and Training (ATVET). Participants will get the opportunity to learn about the ATVET journey from classic TVET to championing gender-transformative approaches for women’s social and economic empowerment. \nDespite unemployment in many African countries\, the high demand for a qualified workforce in the agricultural sector is not sufficiently met. This disparity is partly due to a mismatch between education curricula and labour market needs\, particularly practical skills and work experience. Anchored under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) of the African Union\, the ATVET project was implemented to address this challenge in 12 African countries\, with support from GIZ until June 2020. \nTo achieve real impact for employment and entrepreneurship in agriculture\, ATVET focused on competency-based training along value chains to meet labour market needs. As part of the Skills Initiative for Africa (SIFA)\, the ATVET for Women (ATVET4W) is supporting the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) to continue these efforts with a focus on gender-transformative approaches in six countries: Benin\, Burkina Faso\, Ghana\, Kenya\, Malawi and Togo. \nATVET and ATVET4W\, both ambitious pan-African undertakings\, generated a wealth of good practices and lessons learnt on several topics\, including integrating ATVET into national policies\, partnerships for in-company internships\, competency-based training approaches and Gender Transformative Change in practice. During this seminar\, ATVET4W colleagues will share some of these key insights and point towards a plethora of knowledge products that GIZ colleagues can use for project planning and implementation of skills development in agriculture – including a focus on women’s empowerment. \nSpeakers and Inputs \n\nGeoffroy Gantoli (Regional Coordinator\, ATVET4W) will provide an overview of key results\, impacts and lessons learnt from the ATVET and ATVET4W modules\nJoan Githinji & Lamina Ratovonasy (M&E\, Comms & Knowledge Management Advisors\, ATVET4W) will present some of the project’s knowledge products as inspiration for other projects\nFrank Bertelmann (Programme Manager Global Project Rural Employment with focus on youth) will interview Miriam Heidtmann (Programme Manager\, ATVET4W) and Abdoulaye Yeye (National Coordinator for Burkina Faso of the Global Project Rural Employment with a focus on youth) to discuss the sustainability and further development of the original ATVET interventions.\n\nModeration\n\nSara Jabril\, Advisor (ATVET4W)\nRonald Kouago\, Junior Advisor (ATVET4W)\n\nHost\nGlobal Project Rural Employment with a focus on youth in collaboration with SIFA ATVET4W project. \nQuestions \nYou already have questions that you would like to ask the presenters? Kindly send them to julia.bayer@giz.de prior to the webinar. We’ll make sure that the questions will be addressed in the Q&A part of the session! \nWe are very much looking forward to discussing the inputs during the webinar.
